About these rate and quote calculators

Pricing is the decision that shapes everything else in a freelance business, and it is easy to get wrong in one direction: taking an employee salary, dividing by 2,080 hours and quoting that number. It ignores unpaid time, business costs and the contributions an employer would normally pay on your behalf. The three calculators here take that problem from three angles.

The hourly rate calculator starts from the income you want to take home and works backwards through tax, retirement saving, expenses and the hours you can realistically bill. The project quote calculator turns an hourly rate into a price for a specific job, task by task, with expenses and a contingency buffer. The employee vs freelance comparison shows what a freelancer must bill to match the take-home pay and benefits of a salaried job.

All three run in your browser, and none of them uploads what you type. They use simple, editable assumptions and say what those assumptions are. Tax is the weak point of every calculator of this kind, so treat the results as a starting point for a conversation with an accountant, not as tax advice.
